Here's the trailer for Iron Man 2. I think it looks awesome. Here's why:

1. Robert Downey Jr. is hilarious
2. Sam Rockwell is in it
3. Scarlett Johansson is in it
4. Don Cheadle replaced Terrence Howard

I'm also a big fan of the fact that his secret identity isn't secret. It's a refreshing addition to all the super-hero movies of late. Now as soon as we can drop the use of the song 'Iron Man', this movie will be perfect.

I have no comment on this gold-toothed, laser-whipping, Russian Mickey Rourke.

The Bucks Hire Actors to Cheer for Them

Milwaukee Bucks big-man Andrew Bogut will be purchasing 100 seats in the lower bowl for every home game this season for fans who are willing to make asses of themselves:

"I saw a couple of fans in Houston singing and stuff,'' Bogut said of why he decided to form Squad 6. "I wanted to do something for the atmosphere at the Bradley Center. So we had auditions. It was basically the crazier and louder you are, the more of a chance you had of getting free tickets. ... But, if you're in the squad and somebody sees you're not doing what you're supposed to be doing, you don't get tickets for the next game.''

I think Bogut is a genius for doing this because there's nothing better than a badass home crowd, with the exception of the Boston Celtics. It reminds me of the gang with cowbells in Sacramento in the early 2000's. On the other hand, it is pretty much the same as hiring actors to play the role of fans for your team. They held auditions, they have wardrobe requirements (Bucks-wear), and they have an agreement that if you don't do your part, you're replaced. I guess the fear of being kicked out of 'Squad 6' is what makes the fans so crazy. Apparently they would sing 'Dude Looks Like a Lady' every time Joakim Noah touched the ball last time the Bulls were in town. Kinda funny.

Good for you Milwaukee, you've pushed back the sale of your team by at least a year.

Quentin Tarantino made that announcement during an Italian interview recently. He added:

“Kill Bill 3 will probably come out, I gotta wait a couple of years, but I want ten years to pass from the second one to the third one.”

Kill Bill Vol.1 came out in 2003 so that means he may make the third one in 2013. Why ten years you ask? QT explains:

“Two reasons. One, I think me and Uma needed a ten year break. And the second one, I loved the character a lot. I think she deserved ten years to relax. She deserved ten years of no fighting, she deserved ten years with her child Bebe, just of peace. I put her through a lot those first two movies, I want her to have a nice, peaceful life for ten years. I want her to set up her store, and have some peace. But after ten years we’ll make her fight again.”

Do you remember in Kill Bill Vol.1 when Bill calls Elle Driver at the moment she's about to euthanize the comatose Bride? Here's his speech, it's pretty similar reasoning to the previous quote, I think.

Here's a short film directed by Adam Berg and sponsored by Philips. It's a frozen scene with some clowns robbing and terrorizing a building while fending off police officers. It's all one shot and you float through like a fly listening to sinister music. It's also got some clear influences from The Dark Knight so it's got to be good.

These are some crazy detailed images by artist Claire Scully. Her subject matter appears to be unimpressed animals. The wolf is wondering why you're looking at him, the owl isn't smart enough to be unimpressed, and that tiger just isn't having a good time, period.

They're pretty incredible though. I'm really impressed with the catch lights in the animals eyes. It prevents a flat look and personifies them, as I already wittily commented on.

Toss it on a light grey sweater and charge 180 bucks, you'll make millions off hipster scum.

The Zurich Chamber Orchestra in Switzerland recently released this advertising campaign titled 'Touch Your Senses'. They're classy illustrations of wee little people playing your tiniest body parts like instruments and causing you to feel stuff.

I'm going to treat this like I treat all media; very literally. This advertising is therefore telling me that if I go see the Zurich Chamber Orchestra I will experience:

1. Hair raising cellos
2. Heart wrenching percussion
3. And some broad playing a flute so well that I'll cry

Peter Funch: Cool Photographer, Great Name

This is a photo series by Danish photographer Peter Funch. He staked out a few locations in downtown New York and shot hundreds of shots of people passing by. He then picked out people with similar characteristics, like wearing red, yawning, or carrying a yellow envelope, and photoshopped only those people into the image. For instance, everyone in the 'wearing red' photo actually passed by that part of New York, it was just a separate times. Funch merely went through, found them, and put them altogether to create the illusion that they were all in that place together at the same time. It's fairly simple, which makes it such a great idea.

I think it's amazing because the shots are all so beautifully composed since he probably had so many people to choose from. It's like setting up an image of twenty people without having to direct them. The series is called Babel Tales.

Sublime's New Frontman

There have been rumours for a while about a Sublime reunion and apparently there is a smidgen of truth to them. Recently, former Sublime drummer Bud Gaugh and bassist Eric Wilson performed with a singer named Rome and recieved a very positive reaction. There are no concrete plans for a tour, but I can see this turning into Sublime 2.0.

Here's something to convince you; a video of Rome singing an acoustic version of T.I.'s Whatever You Like:

Celebrity Jeopardy was this week and, as you can see above, Andy Richter absolutely demolished Wolf Blitzer and a desperate housewife. Wolf didn't even finish on the plus side so Alex had to give him $1,000 to compete in Final Jeopardy.

The best part is, this isn't even the final score. After Final Jeopardy Andy finished with a staggering $68,000!! I'm ebarassed for Wolf, one of the most prominent journalists in news media. Oh well.

The march was made possible by the ramblings of Glenn Beck, the love-child of Bill O'Reilly and a box of Milk Duds. What Beck didn't consider was the amount of stupidity that is generated when this many butt-sniffin' morons get together. Luckily, this guy thought to go out and ask some questions of the protestors:

Kanye West IS a jackass

This post is not about Kanye West. We've already established that he is a jackass.

Moving on, you've probably noticed a lot of stories regarding a supposed comment made by President Obama in which he calls West a jackass for his latest embarrassment. It's spreading like wildfire right now because Republicans all over the states need some ammo to fight against quality health-care.

Fact of the matter is, Obama is right. Kanye West is a jackass.

The part of this story that I don't like is how this news got leaked and how it was dealt with afterward. Here's the original place it was reported, Twitter:
Terry Moran, or Terry Moron as I've hilariously dubbed him, is an ABC reporter who overheard Obama say this during an interview. Problem is, the interview was not yet on the record. It was, therefore, off the record. The record includes Twitter, Moron.

So ABC came out with a statement saying how the Tweet shouldn't have been posted, and they apologized. I have a problem with that apology, though. All it does is solidify the fact that Obama did in fact say West was a jackass. I agree, and I think Obama is a pimp for saying it, but that apology is bullshit. The apology should have read something like, "These comments were made during an off the record session and therefore cannot be verified." Instead, they twist the knife in Obama's back by saying, "He totally said that bad thing, but we shouldn't have told you! Oops!" Fuck you, ABC.

Obama called that cop who arrested Prof. Gates 'stupid'. He was.
Obama called Kanye West a jackass. He is.
Why not embrace this new found truthiness in American politics?

The US Open: A Shit Show

This year's US Open was completely ridiculous.

I assumed it would be like any other US Open in that Roger Federer and one of the Williams' sisters would walk away with the title. Apparently assuming DOES make an ass out of you and me. You are an ass for another reason. You know.

Let's go over what happened:
1. Nadal came back after missing two majors and stunk it up hard.
2. Kim 'Baby Mama' Clijsters won the Women's title after coming out of retirement.
3. Federer lost to Del Porto, ending his 5 US Open wins in a row.
4. Hewitt, Murray, Roddick, and Djokivic were as disappointing as usual.
5. Serena Williams was eliminated from the tournament for a foot fault.

As the announcers mentioned, calling a foot fault is stupid to begin with let alone on a second serve (the gimme serve), and when the match is a point away from completion. So Serena flipped out on the bitch, they hit her with her second unsportsmanlike of the match, and she was eliminated from the tourney. That's a rough way to go.

Especially when this used to happen with much less consequence:

Point is, Serena should have been allowed to keep playing, she would have rallied, it would have been a classic Williams win.

Here's a sweet time-lapse video of the making of a Macworld Magazine cover. It's interesting to see every stage of the process and it shines light on how simply something like this is achieved. I'm especially fond of the video because the photography portion is almost identical to my days as a photographic intern for Mark Burstyn. The average day with Mark literally looked exactly like that so it's pretty cool that methods are generally the same no matter what level you're at. Mark even has the same giant camera stand. Craaazy!

As the health care debate rages on in the US, President Obama is still pushing for major reform while the Republican party stands opposed. Their argument, of course, is that Obama's bill is socialist. The same argument they used when Obama announced that he would be giving a speech to every American student on their first day of school. I guess the Republicans have a point though, who in their right mind would want their child to be encouraged to learn and succeed while at the same time have access to effective health-care?

During his latest speech to congress about health care, Obama shot down rumours that the new health care would be used by illegal immigrants. While stating that this claim was untrue, a Republican from South Carolina named Joe Wilson yelled out "You lie!".

This dink has since apologized, to which Obama said, "We can disagree without being disagreeable."

Fuck You. Do your fucking job and propose something on the contrary or go stand outside with the rest of the picketers and their poorly made signs.

His work is incredibly detailed for the scale and it offers a rather emotional storyline as well. The little scenes are cool pieces of art on their own and they also have the ability to tell somewhat morbid stories when photographed.

This is a website for an organization called Eternal Earth-Bound Pets, USA. The purpose of the group is to house and care for the pets of those who are saved during The Rapture. Apparently around 50% of the population of the United States believe that The Rapture will occur and all Christians will be taken away to heaven, leaving only their pets and the rest of us sinners.

Not a problem. For a small fee, one of the athiests enlisted at EEBP will take care of your furry friend while you're enjoying eternal bliss, or 28 virgins, or whatever it is they do in heaven. I think it's a pretty noble cause, and besides, you don't need your money while you're in heaven. Except on Sundays, God collects on Sundays.

The Financial Troubles of Annie Leibovitz

Annie Leibovitz is, in my opinion, one of the best photographers of all time. She has produced some of the most stunning portraiture of the last century and should be hailed as royalty in the medium. Unfortunately, she owes $24 million in debt and it's due today. If she doesn't pay, she will lose not only her homes but all of the photographs, negatives, and intellectual property she has accumulated in her tremendous career. She borrowed the money from a company called Art Capital back in February when debts and court fees became too much. Now they want it back!

It's pretty depressing that someone with seemingly unlimited talent is in this kind of situation but I guess finances is not one of her aforementioned skills. If anyone deserves a bail-out, it's Annie.

The NBA just became a safer place today. San Antonio Spurs forward Bruce Bowen has announced his retirement after 12 years of playing and intentionally injuring other players.

I am very happy to see this piece of shit go. On countless occasions Bowen has been known to purposefully place other players in the NBA in immediate harm's way. Whether it be kicking Amare in the achille's heel while he was jumping up to dunk, kneeing Steve Nash in the junk while he was on the perimeter, or kicking Ray Allen in the back after he had already fallen to the ground, Bruce Bowen is not only a mediocre player but a failure as a human being.

If I were to go to someone's work and intentionally injure them so that they couldn't do their job and therefore not earn a living, would I not be punished for my actions? Bruce Bowen places players in physical danger knowing full well that any injury could potentially be career-threatening. How is it any different?

His 'signature' move when it comes to injuring players is placing his foot underneath that of a jump shooter so that when said shooter lands, he rolls and sprains his ankle on the uneven surface of Bowen's shoe. He does this several times a season and sometimes ends up injuring players for weeks at a time.

This is an ad for the World Wildlife Fund made by a Brazilian based company called DDB Brazil. The video recreates the events that took place on 9/11 and then add to it by depicting countless more airplanes flying towards New York City buildings. It's like 9/11 times a thousand. The point they try to make with this is that the 2005 tsunami killed 100 times more people and that we should fear and respect our planet more than Dick Cheney- I mean terrorists.

This is a British series that Deacon showed me back on T3. It's a spoof of an 80's horror series written by and starring Garth Marenghi. The joke is that this show was made in the 80's but was too radical for BBC and only now can they air the episodes. Here's a statement about the show from Marenghi's website:

'Darkplace was scripted and directed by the best-selling horror writer Garth Marenghi, known to thousands as the author of such classic chillers as The Ooze (can water die?), Afterbirth (a mutated placenta attacks Bristol) and Black Fang (rats learn to drive). In addition, Marenghi starred as the show’s lead character, Dr. Rick Dagless M.D., a maverick doctor battling against the evil forces lurking in a standard-sized hellmouth underneath a hospital in pre-apocalyptic Romford.'

Even though there's only a few episodes, I would rank this among my favourite shows of all time. Watch the opening credits and you'll see why:

Oasis Broke Up...

It's hard to believe that it'll stick but apparently the Gallagher brother circus is closed for business. Noel has issued a statement that he has quit Oasis and for super serious this time. Word on the street is that it stemmed from a routine pre-gig argument between the brothers concerning Liam being way drunk on arrival for a Paris concert. It's reported that Liam may have crossed the line with a few comments about Noel's children before throwing a guitar at his older brother. The coolest part about this supposed retelling is that Noel caught the guitar, dropped it on the ground, smashed it to shit, and then left the room. If that's true then I think it's a pretty cool way for Oasis to disband. Noel's like James Bond if that's true.

I imagine there'll be a reunion in the near future, and if not we'll at least be able to enjoy a Noel solo album.

All of our dreams have come true, friends. Sylvester Stallone will direct and star in Rambo 5. Thanks to the undeniable success of the previous Rambo, in which he carried out a genocide with his bare hands and a bow and arrow, the same production company has greenlit a brand new slaughterfest. Unlike Rambos of the past though, John Rambo will be fighting his battle on US soil, along with a few cerveza runs in Mexico. Apparently the demographic that he will be making extinct in this installment is human traffickers. So if you kidnap little girls and sell them to oil tycoons prepare to have your throat ripped out of your neck.

Here's a trailer for the film Men Who Stare at Goats starring the likes of Clooney, Bridges, Spacey, and McGregor. It looks like a Coen brothers movie but it isn't! The cast is impressive and has a pretty good track record of hilarious roles between them. This just goes to show how Jeff Bridges needs more comedic roles.

I'm a little surprised at how many Jedi knight references are made considering Obi Wan Kenobi is in the movie.

Essential Action #2: Hard Target

Where to begin with Hard Target.

Well, the first thing you should know is that it is directed by John Woo. He's the king of stylized action movies and is responsible for gems like The Killer, Face/Off, and Mission:Impossible. This means that not only will the action be over-the-top but it will be plentiful. You're bound to see lots of spin-kicks in trench coats and slow-mo emptying of Beretta clips.

Secondly, Hard Target is filmed in such a way that the setting, New Orleans, is as much a character as our hero Jean-Claude. The soundtrack is 100% bluesy and for the first time JCVD's french accent suits his character. The town is made out to be a ghost town full of criminals and homeless people, and what better setting for a good old fashioned game of manhunt.

The character of Chance Boudreau, played by JCVD, is the perfect cheesy action movie hero. Not only does he have a greasy jheri curl mullet and all of his clothes are made of denim, but his name is Chance. Chance! One of the funniest moments in the history of movie dialogue occurs in this movie when Chance is asked about his obscure name:

His mama took one! A chance! I love this movie.

Hard Target's greatest strength as a movie is how the plot follows the same storyline as a video game. There's a main boss, his right-hand man, and an infinite amount of gun toting henchmen. On top of that, all of the bad guys have unique weapons like crossbows, sniper rifles, and singe-shot pistols, all justified by the fact that they're 'in it for the hunt'.

So not only do we have the brilliant Jean-Claude Van Damme as the mysterious and deadly Chance Boudreau, but the main villian is everyone's favourite Lance Henriksen of Aliens and Millenium fame. His right hand man is named Pik van Cleef played by Arnold Vosloo whom you know as the mummy from The Mummy movies. And last but not least, Wilfred Brimley is in this movie. Wilfred Brimley is in this movie. I had to say that twice. He plays a horse-back riding, bow and arrow carrying, gumbo cooking Frenchman who's old age and limited mobility doesn't stop him from thwarting countless professional killers.

The action scenes are too many to disect but you should know that there is a scene in which Chance grabs a snake by the 'throat' and punches it in the face, knocking it out. While you think that's probably the most ridiculous thing you'll see, wait until you see the death of the main villain. Hard Target follows Die Hardian Ethos well and as a result a monster showdown between Chance and Lance results in one of my favourite villian deaths ever.

Overall, Hard Target is an easy watch because it doesn't waste time with character development, avoiding stereotypes, and transitioning well between scenes. It's Jean-Claude Van Damme and Wilfred Brimley killing hundreds of men with sunglasses and leather jackets. Sometimes even in slow motion.

Fantasic Mr. Fox

Here's the trailer for the film Fantastic Mr. Fox, the newest work from director Wes Anderson. Anderson is most notable for his unique film style which usually consists of Bill Murray and the Wilson brothers conversing monotonously over indie music. Fantastic Mr. Fox is based on a Roald Dahl book and will be Wes Anderson's first attempt at stop-motion animation. The trailer makes the movements of the characters seem a bit rough and it's hard to not picture George Clooney's face the whole time but I have faith it will be good.

Apparently Steve has been an honorary deputy for 20 years in New Orleans and he actually serves as an officer 'between films'. So when he's not filming classics like Pistol Whipped (2008), Today You Die (2005), and Clementine (2004), Seagal is keeping the streets clean and brainstorming new film names. I only know Steve as the wise-beyond-his-years vigilante out to teach lessons and administer life-altering beatings, it's hard to believe he can go by the book. I guess it's true though because it looks like he cut off his ponytail...

Shaq vs Nash

You've probably heard about Shaq's new reality show called 'Shaq VS.' in which he competes against top athletes in other sports. Recently he was in a boxing match with Oscar De La Hoya, which I'm assuming ended in the death of the boxer/pop sensation. More importantly, Shaq got the idea for the show when he was traded to Phoenix and Steve Nash told him that he was working on doing a reality show. Nash told Shaq about a show where he would compete against athletes from other sports. Sounds familiar. So after Nash discovered that Shaq was biting his shit he called his lawyer and they settled on giving Nash some cash AND an Executive Producer credit on the show!

Steve's the man. Although I'm probably one of the few who still finds Shaq's antics funny, it's obvious that a reality show starring Steve Nash would have been much more entertaining. He's more athletic than Shaq and he's probably one of the funniest guys in the NBA.

The Wolfman

This is the trailer for the upcoming movie The Wolfman starring Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, and Hugo Weaving. First of all, that's a badass cast. Any other time I would question why it's necessary to make another werewolf movie but this one carries some star power and looks genuinely scary. There hasn't been a great werewolf movie since Jack Nicholson's Wolf so hopefully this one can show Van Helsing, Underworld, and Twilight what's up.

Essential Action #1: True Lies

This will be the first of several appearances by Mr.Schwarzenegger and what better way to start then with one of the best blockbusters of all time. True Lies.

Before the days of Transformers, action blockbusters had character and integrity. They were more than just test movies for Blu-Ray players at Best Buy. They featured seasoned actors placed in extraordinary situations with luck on their side. True Lies is a very important action movie and therefore an obvious choice to begin this list.

As you will see with most of the movies on this list, True Lies is an excellent example of a film that follows the Die Hardian Ethos. DHE, for short, refers to the structure of an action movie and it's ability to best follow the themes put forward by Die Hard and the characterizations portrayed by it's protagonist John McClane. Simply put, a hero is introduced that we grow attached to through his/her humour and rebel attitude. Something is taken from this character and the result is a huge amount of death culminating in the stylistic murder of the lead villian. At the same time, there must be no direct involvement of major law enforcement to assist the character and there must also be a comic relief cast to play opposite the hero. In the end, our hero is reunited with that which he lost and he/she gains valuable perspective on whatever conflict was occuring before the action began (i.e. marriage, family, work).

The more a film follows Die Hardian Ethos, the easier it is for the audience to become interested because they feel comfortable and familiar.

So back to True Lies. There's no question whether or not the protagonist is a success because Arnold is the king of action movies. His efficient, military killing style and playful, foreign charm are all you need. He's coupled with wise-guy Tom Arnold of Roseanne fame, which ups the funny tenfold. That's one of the best features of True Lies, it's humour. Everyone in the cast has their shot at comedy and it keeps the movie very light-hearted. The casting of Bill Paxton as a sleezy used-car salesman who pisses his pants at TWO points in the movie is genius. True Lies is pre-9/11 so the villians are generic middle-eastern terrorists sporting turbans and AK-47's, but that just adds to the overall 'this is an action movie' sense that True Lies puts across. It doesn't take itself too seriously. The villian is forgetable but his death is supremely written and very fitting. There's nothing worse then watching an action movie and not feeling like the bad guy got what was coming. This guy does. The killing in the movie is completely original and 'Oh, Shit!' inspiring. Overall, True Lies is an action movie for anyone and I suggest you see it, even if The Notebook is your favourite movie, you'll have fun.

Essential Action: Introduction

I'm pleased to announce that I will be starting a new thread similar to 'Song's of the Day' in which I will feature an essential movie from my favourite film genre: Action. The action movie is a unique genre because, like horror, if done correctly or incorrectly, both could easily result in an equally entertaining movie. The high budget blockbuster action movie has just as much cultural signifigance as the cult classics, if not less. In an effort to maintain consistency in this list of Essential Action, I would like to propose a grading rubric that will be used to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each action flick.

The rubric will contain sections for:
- Protagonist: backstory, intensity, coolness, how much I wish I could be them, etc
- Antagonist: evilness, scheming ability,how much I wish I could be them, etc.
- Conflict: relevance, believability, awesomeness
- Kills & Explosions: quantity, originality, sweetness
- Cast: big bugdet names, comic relief, typecasts

I will not be ranking the films in any specific order because I believe every action movie has something to offer and should all be treated with equal regard. I hope you enjoy the list to come as much as I will enjoy writing it. Action movies deserve the same respect as movies made for Oscar season,

In the same vein as Jay-Z's 'Death to Auto-Tune', The Beastie Boys and Nas released this single called 'Too Many Rappers'. The song is about the overload of weak rappers and shitty ryhmes that fill the airwaves nowadays. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a new hip-hop artist since the 90's. There's obvious exceptions but the overall scene is whack. Leave it to Jay-Z, Nas, and the Boys to call them out.

The best part of this song is the last couple lines:

This is a song by comedian Tim Michin called 10 Foot Cock & A Few Hundred Virgins. It's a fairly clever religious commentary based mainly around the fact that God frowns upon buggery. One of my favourite pastimes is hearing all the things the Bible forbids and allows and how hypocritical, ignorant, and out-dated they all are. That's no reason not to blindly follow it, though.

Stupid Dunks

The annual Lakers 3-on-3 Tournament was held recently and here are some video highlights of the dunk competition that took place. It's basically just guys jumping over a ridiculous amount of people and still doing a trick before dunking. I've started to see a lot of dunk vids lately where folks are pulling off stuff that I don't think the top dunkers in the NBA could do. This year's NBA All-Star game is gonna be fun.

Here we have Quentin Tarantino's list of his favourite 20 films since the release of Resevoir Dogs in 1992. I've always considered Tarantino one of the greatest directors of all time given his resume over the past 17 years, so it's interesting to see what he considers a good movie. You would assume the list would consist of mainly old-school Kung Fu and gore movies but it's actuall pretty funny to see what some of his picks are. There are a few questionable picks but he backs them up with good reasoning.

Danny Doin' Work

This video is of trick biker Danny MacAskill tearing up the street doing urban bike tricks. It's amazing. He does things I didn't even know you could accomplish on a bike.
What makes it even better though is the music and editing. The song builds as Danny tries to complete his first trick, and when he does the song picks up all of a sudden and all of the tricks sync up perfectly. The song, Funeral by Band of Horses, is one of those 'epic' sounding songs too so you feel like you're witnessing something really important.

This is a video some moron recorded of her and a friend trying to convert a girl from Hinduism to Christianity. She introduces her friend as such:

'She's Indian. It's an African country in Asia.'

That's just the tip of this dumbass iceberg, too. They move on to religion and attempt to convince their Indian friend that she is 'wrong' and there is too much 'proof' that Jesus existed to believe anything else.

This is some sort of promotion or unofficial music video for the song 'Why Do You Let Me Stay Here' featuring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. The two star in the movie '500 Days of Summer' together and Zooey's band She And Him are the group behind this song.

It's a pretty cool dance sequence that reminds me of super old classics where actors were always triple threats. I had no idea 3rd Rock From the Sun guy could dance so well. I also didn't know Ms. Deschanel wrote such lovely tunes.
